For years I have been flooding my sphere of influence with information about brand protection: what it is and why it is important. Ideas become protectable brands. The reason that the concept resonates with me is that I have fallen prey to running my mouth about a great idea that came to me in one of my daily daydreams and watched someone else bring the concept to reality. Sure, they beat me to the “punch” and here I was left with very little recourse. This taught me a valuable lesson about protecting your valuable content FAST. A friend of mine has a saying that I love; it is “Went too far, stayed too long, got back too late.” This is when you miss the boat totally.
It is never too soon to protect your interest. Brand protection is the limited amount of insurance that you have that may allow you to have recourse if someone steals your idea. Sure, we want to share the idea with the world and allow the world to be a “litmus” test for the soundness of our concept. However, brand protection would be as simple as registering a copyright, trademarking a brand name or only divulging the idea with a confidentiality agreement in place. Of course, if you are cavalier about your idea, this may not seem important to you. But I guarantee you; if you place value on your concept by protecting it the world will value it as well.
So trust and believe that when you hear me speak or write about brand protection, it comes from a very personal place. I believe that all ideas have value, whether that value is tangible or intangible. I don’t know about you, but I cherish my daydreaming time, it is when I come up with my best ideas. Make those ideas important to the world by safeguarding them.
The quote from the Kathryn Stockett, from the book and movie, The Help comes to mind, perhaps you are familiar. It goes: “You is kind. You is smart. You is important” and might I add so are your ideas, so protect them!
